At least 15 dead, more than 100 missing after landslides in Uganda

At least 15 people were killed and 113 others were missing after landslides buried homes in six villages in eastern Uganda, police said.

Another 15 injured people were rescued and taken to Buluganya Health Center.

The Uganda Red Cross Society said Thursday that 13 bodies had been found after the landslides buried 40 homes, and that rescue efforts were continuing.

Local media reported that authorities expected the death toll to rise to 30.

The landslides occurred after heavy rains on Wednesday evening in the mountainous Bulambuli district, where landslides are common. The area is about 280 kilometers (175 miles) east of the capital, Kampala.

A local reporter for The Associated Press told The Associated Press that local officials said an excavator would be brought in to help with relief efforts, but the roads were covered in mud and the rain continued.

The affected area covers about 20 hectares, with farms and ranches scattered beneath it.

Photos and videos of people digging through the mud looking for victims were shared on social media. Some homes were completely covered in mud, while others had only the roof protruding above the ground.

The Daily Monitor reported that most of the bodies found so far were children.

The prime minister’s office issued a disaster warning on Wednesday, saying heavy rains across the country had cut off major roads.

Two rescue boats capsized on Wednesday during a rescue mission on the Nile, where the Bakwach Bridge was submerged.
